By the early 1970s Hammer was finding it increasingly difficult to
compete without the support of major American distributors. The
double-bill of Straight On Till Morning and Fear in the Night were
originally planned as TV movies, but were ultimately produced as low
budget thrillers and distributed by EMI. Straight On Till Morning took
its title from J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan and was the only Hammer
assignment for Peter Collinson, who had previously directed Up the
Junction and The Italian Job.
Rita Tushingham stars as Brenda, a young
Liverpool lass who goes to London in search of the perfect man and a
better life. Unfortunately, the seamy underside of London grabs hold of
her when she falls for a handsome but psychotic young man named Peter
(Briant). Becoming increasingly obsessed with Peter, Brenda begins to
lose touch with both herself and reality and fails to recognize that
Peter is a misanthropic murderer. An incredibly bleak thriller,
Straight On Till Morning is a sardonic, nightmarish fairy tale that
presents the flipside of early 1970s feminism.
